R.I.P Sister Maria Therese Valente, O.Carm.

Sister Helena - Thursday, August 18, 2016

Sister Maria Therese of Carmel, O.Carm. passed peacefully to the Lord on the afternoon of Thursday, August 18, 2016 at St. Patrick’s Residence, in the 66th year of her religious life. Having had a mastectomy on July 15th, Sr. Therese experienced complications which resulted in a steady decline of her medical condition. She returned to St. Patrick’s on August 15th to receive hospice care. The local Community had prayed the Liturgy of the Hours with Sr. Therese in the morning, and when she took her last breath she was lovingly surrounded by our Sisters and Msgr. John Dalton.

Born Mary Valente on June 24, 1930, Sr. Maria Therese of Carmel entered the Congregation on February 2, 1950, was professed on December 10, 1951, and made perpetual profession on December 8, 1955. Her missions included Sacred Heart Home (Chicago, IL), Carmel Manor (Fort Thomas, KY), Kahl Home (Davenport, IA), Madonna Residence (Brooklyn, NY), Ozanam Hall, (Bayside, NY), and St. Patrick’s Residence (Joliet and Naperville, IL)

Sr. Maria Therese was assigned to St. Patrick’s Residence (Joliet) on April 18, 1988 and assisted with the move to Naperville the following year. She always “worked the clinics” and had the role of First Assistant and Bursar until 2013. In recent years Sr. Therese used an electric scooter to get around the Home, and this led to her nickname “Hot Rod”, which was fondly bestowed upon her by the staff. She had a fondness for Rice Krispies which she always ate for breakfast, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was devoted to both her Carmelite family and her natural family. Diligent and conscientious in her duties, Sr. Therese always put everyone else’s needs before her own.

A loving and generous daughter of Mother Angeline Teresa, may Sr. Maria Therese of Carmel now enter the presence of the Lord whom she so faithfully served for more than six decades. We rejoice in knowing that she has moved on to a place even more wonderful than her beloved “Planet Naperville”,
and where she now experiences the glorious presence of the Lord whom she served so faithfully, and His Blessed Mother whom she so longed to see.
