R.I.P Sister M. Stephen Immaculate, O.Carm.

Sister Helena - Monday, January 07, 2019

Sister M. Stephen Immaculate, O.Carm. returned to the Lord on the night of Saturday, January 5, 2019 in the 77th year of her religious life.

Mary Agnes Sodl was born in Austria on February 1, 1922 and at the age of ten came to the United States with her sister, Rose. With her parents, Stephen and Mary (nee Yost) Sodl and her siblings, the family eventually made their home in Whitehall, PA.  Having entered the Congregation on December 8, 1942, Sr. Stephen professed First Vows on June 16, 1944 and Final Vows on August 15, 1949.  Her missions included St. Leo’s Abbey, Villa Maria, and Lourdes Residence in Florida, the Bishop’s Residence in Albany, St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, St. Rita’s Home in Columbus, and Kahl Home in Davenport.  She was missioned four times at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas (1949-1951; 1953-1957; 1958-1965; 1970-1981).  In 198, Sr. Stephen received an assignment to Villa Teresa and remained there until January 2006 when the Home’s operations ceased, after which she moved on to St. Teresa’s Motherhouse.  In 2012, as her health began to fail, it became necessary that she go to the Enhanced Living Convent at Ozanam Hall, where she was more recently admitted to the nursing home.

While active in the apostolate, Sr. Stephen was mainly assigned to the kitchen, pantry, refectory, Chapel, and as a Eucharistic Minister.  She loved animals – especially dogs, cats, and horses, and while her health permitted she went for a walk every day.  She often went out on her day off for a very well-done steak, a baked potato and a salad.  April Fool’s Day was one of her favorite days and she took great delight in fooling many an unsuspecting victim.  Sr. Stephen enjoyed watching EWTN and football and was an avid Notre Dame fan.  She also enjoyed a good party, Polish music, and dancing the Polka!

Sr. M. Stephen Immaculate was blessed with the gift of a long life – almost 97 years - and although we are sad to see her leave, we rejoice as she enters into her new and everlasting life!
