International Day of Happiness

March 20th is designated International Day of Happiness and the social media world is bursting with the hash tag #createhappiness. Happiness is a highly sought after entity. Who does not want to be happy, right? If you search for different quotes on Google on the topic of "joy" you will find some like these:

“True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new.” (Antoine de Saint-Exuperys)

“Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.” (Helen Keller)

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” (Buddha)

Our Faith tells us that happiness is more than a state of mind. Scriptures give us some beautiful reminders of what true joy means.  It is in having a clear conscience and a right relationship with God. Here are some beautiful scriptural quotes:

"For in him our heart shall rejoice in the Lord; and shall be delighted in his salvation."- Psalm 34:9

"Light is risen to the just, and joy to the upright of heart."- Psalm 97:11

"And these things we write to you, that you may rejoice, and your joy may be full."- 1John 1:4

"I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, My soul will be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness...." (Isaiah 61:10)

So, on this Sunday designated as International Day of Happiness, let us listen to the prophet Nehemiah who exhorts us "This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
