Please find an account of an event that Sr. Mary Josephine and I attended in Derry. N.I. this past weekend.

Sr. Mary Josephine Crowe, a Carmelite Sister for the Aged and Infirm who ministers to the Aged and Infirm of Our Lady's Manor in Dublin, Ireland, was invited to speak during a week-long retreat to mark the anniversary of the death of Sister Clare Crockett, who died six years ago was held in St. Mary’s Church, Creggan Derry, Saturday April 29th, 2022. The presentation was entitled: “Call to Holiness is a call beyond being a Celebrity”.

Sr. Clare, aged 33, died on April 16 2016, when an earthquake struck the home and school of Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother in Playa Prieta, Ecuador, where she was working. Her death touched thousands across the world, and in her home town of Derry a mural has been painted on a gable wall, near Sr. Clare's Brandywell family home.  Sr. Clare's sister Megan Nicell said that the family had been overwhelmed by messages of prayer and support since her death.

Fr Stephen Quinn OCD from the Carmelite Priory and Retreat Centre at Termonbacca which has a close association with Sr. Clare, said that the retreat allows us to draw attention to her life and the holiness she showed in that life. “It's astonishing to see the devotion to Sr. Clare and how much her life, and all she did, has been an example to others”.

Sr. Mary Josephine, O.Carm, was invited to share how the life of Sr. Clare inspired her to live more faithfully her commitment to religious life. Sr. Mary Josephine gave a very down to earth sharing, the reality of living her day to day commitment in religious life, and the strength and encouragement needed on the journey from those who have walked, or walking, this same journey. Her talk was very well received and many in the Church were touched by her genuineness. It was a wonderful opportunity for vocation promotion, our presence, an opportunity to establish some wonderful connections with the Carmelite Fathers in Derry and also the Parish of St. Mary’s Church, Creggan, Derry. You can view the full talk given by Sr. Mary Josephine, from their website, and link to their webcam.
