Sister M. Joan Rita Anne O.Carm. passed away peacefully on July 15, 2021 in the I.C.U. at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston where she had been admitted on July 12 th.  Sr. Joan went home to the Lord in the 54th year of her religious life.

Joan Rita Jennings entered the world in Amesbury, MA on February 14, 1934, the ninth of ten children born to Remsen and Robena (nee Seavey) Jennings.Sr. Joan is survived by her sister, Mary Bettencourt, and several nieces and nephews. Having entered the Congregation on September 8, 1967, Sr. Joan professed first vows on April 6, 1970, and made her final profession of vows on April 2, 1977. She served the Lord faithfully in each of the three missions she was assigned to during her years as a Carmelite Sister: Ferncliff Residence, Rhinebeck, NY (1970-1982); Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, Manchester NH (1982-1997),and Marian Manor, So. Boston, MA (1997-2021). In past years, Sr. Joan was appointed to positions in admissions and social service among others, and in more recent years served in Pastoral Care, including as Sacristan and Eucharistic Minister. She loved and was most faithful to Eucharistic Adoration, and having been at Marian Manor for twenty-four years she knew all the Priests, staff and family members.

A prayerful, quiet and gentle religious who patiently carried the cross of illness for many years, Sr. M. Joan Rita Anne gave of herself to the care of the aged and infirm in spite of physical limitations. As we suffer the loss of another of our Sisters, may our hearts be consoled in recalling all the good that Sr. Joan did while she was with us. We trust that her “home-coming” is filled with perfect peace and endless joy!

On July 10, 2021, Sister Dolores Carmel and Sr. Sharon Rose Carmel professed First Vows before Mother Mary Rose, Prioress General of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm.  The Eucharistic liturgy was held at the chapel of Saint Teresa's Motherhouse in Germantown, NY. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York was the main celebrant.  Also present were Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm., Rev. Matthew Breslin and the Carmelites of the Saint Elias Province from Middletown, NY. The occasion was made especially memorable by the families and friends of the newly professed who attended, as well as the Carmelite Sisters from the different Homes, where the newly professed spent their Postulancy and mission experience. Sr. Dolores Carmel's family traveled all the way from California to attend their daughter's First Profession.

We thank God for the grace of receiving two new Sisters to our Carmelite Congregation. We pray for their perseverance and wish them happiness as they continue their journey in Carmel.  We encourage other young women to heed the call of Jesus to follow Him in the life of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity. Be Not Afraid!
