Sister M. Patricia of the Queen of Carmel O.Carm. Although in failing health, Sr. Patricia passed into eternal life unexpectedly on Sunday evening, May 9, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Manor, at the age of 84 and in the 65 th year of her religious life.

Born Ann Marie Markey in New York City on June 13, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Ellen (nee McKenna) Markey, both of whom were born in Ireland. In addition to her Carmelite Sisters, Sr. Patricia is survived by several close cousins.

Sr. Patricia of the Queen of Carmel entered the Congregation on February 2, 1956, professed first vows on September 30, 1957 and final vows on December 8, 1962. She had extensive training in the field of nursing, including a Master’s Degree and was the only Sister in the Congregation to ever reach the level of Nurse Practitioner, completing the necessary studies at Pace University.  Her most recent Missions were St. Patrick’s Home (1980-1996), St. Joseph Nursing Home (1996-2014) and St. Patrick’s Manor (2014-2021).

Sr. Patricia served on the Commission for the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of Mother M. Angeline Teresa for many years and often purchased materials from the Mother Angeline Society to promote Mother’s Cause. She was also a great promoter of vocations to our Congregation, generously distributing vocation materials wherever she went.  She was well read and took the time to mail articles on various subjects to Sisters whom she knew would be interested in the particular topic.  And, in a society where less and less value is placed on human life, Sr. Patricia was a very staunch defender of the Sanctity of Life from conception to natural death.  Outgoing, sociable, and a seasoned traveler, Sr. Patricia was full of love for her Community and for the aged and infirm residents she served throughout more than six decades as a Carmelite Sister.

It was fitting that the Lord called Sr. M. Patricia of the Queen of Carmel to her heavenly home on Mother’s Day, where she experienced the joy of being reunited with her own dear mother, as well as the joy of looking upon the Mother and Queen of Carmel whose name she so proudly bore.
