Vocation Story

Sister Maria Agnes O'Leary, O.Carm.

When I graduated from High school my first job was working in an office in the Department of Education. After working there for a few years I knew this was not the career for me. I went to Nursing school in England; graduated and returned to work in Ireland at a Nursing Home with the beautiful name of "Our Lady's Manor" where I first met the Carmelite Sisters. I had worked other places, but somehow this nursing home was different. The joy and dedication of the Sisters really inspired me. One of the Sisters I frequently worked with, one day asked me if I had ever considered Religious life. That invitation planted the seed which was watered and nourished by my own commitment to daily prayer and attendance at a weekly Prayer meeting. The Chaplain at the Nursing Home - a Holy Ghost missionary was instrumental in guiding me in my decision. Every month at the nursing home he provided a healing Mass and on many occasions held Holy Hours to pray specifically for vocations. For about a year I pushed the thought of Vocation to the back of my mind, then finally listened- answered "Yes" to God's call and began my adventure with the Lord in Carmel.
