The Carmelite Sisters initiated the Avila Institute of Gerontology as a response to the growing complexity of gerontological health care. This is the educational arm of the Congregation. The Mission of the Avila Institute of Gerontology is to enhance the ministry of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm by providing high quality, affordable educational programs related to the care of the elderly.

The Institute also creates opportunities for individuals to share experiences and knowledge regarding their work with the aged and contribute to the field of gerontology through workshops, publications and studies.
