Pre-Chapter Highlights: Day Seven

The 7th day of the Pre-Chapter meeting opened with a prayer service reflection on King Solomon’s desire for wisdom and fidelity.  The “Prayer of Saint Francis,” musically rendered by John Michael Talbot, invited all present to the challenge of living the life of the Beatitudes exemplified by Christ.  The meeting body was invited to present questions. Mother Mark Louis Anne, Superior General, then discussed the procedure to be followed on Friday, May 16th, when Delegates decide on the order of the Chapter.  There being no further business to discuss, the Delegates returned to their respective Commissions and continued to work on the proposals and non-proposal material.  A votive Mass of Saint Joseph was celebrated by Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm at 4:45 pm.  (See link to the Homily below article).  A Community social was enjoyed by everyone after Mass.  A variety of pizza pies, ice cream, and fraternity, certainly made for a good closing to the seven days of hard work!

We thank all of Sister-Delegates, the Avila Community for their hospitality, and our Sisters out in the Mission houses for all their prayers!  May the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten us, Our Lady of Mount Carmel to guide us, and Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa to intercede for us!

The 6th day of the Pre-Chapter meeting opened with Mass on the Feast of Saint Matthias celebrated by Very Rev. Mario Esposito, O.Carm.  In his homily, Father Mario pointed out that the story of the choice of Saint Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot, and the life of the early Church in general, offer two points for meditation: Life goes on and God provides.  As the delegates continue to meet and to draft proposals during the remaining days of the pre-Chapter meetings, it is certainly helpful to keep eyes, minds and hearts focused, and to keep the flame of faith burning.  See the full homily below.

Today's session was begun with a prayer service led by Sr. Maria Agnes and Sr. Maria Therese with the theme on Mary of Nazareth as model of discipleship. The meeting adjourned not long after and the Delegates returned to their respective Commissions to continue their discussions and drafting of proposals.

Pre-Chapter Highlights: Day Five

The 5th day of the Pre-Chapter meeting opened with a Votive Mass of Our Lady of Fatima celebrated by Very Rev. Mario Esposito, O.Carm.  In his homily, Father Mario recalled the events leading up to the apparition of Mary at Fatima and her message of continued prayers and reparation.  The message of Fatima is also about simple faith and relating to God in the simplicity of children.  It is about hearing and listening.  The followers in the Gospel reading of the day failed to understand the message of Jesus because they failed to listen with openness to the words and works of the One sent by the Father.  It is these same listening posture and openness that are required of all of us, and the Delegates in particular, as we strive to see the Will of God in all we think and do.

Following Mass, Sr. Maureen Theresa Murray led the prayer service to formally open the morning session. Mother Mark Louis Anne, Superior General, reviewed with the Delegates the procedure involved in the drawing up of proposals and non-proposal materials.  A question and answer session followed, along with clarifications, on certain points of significance.  The Delegates adjourned for lunch and reported back to their Commissions for the remainder of the afternoon.  All participated at Evening Prayers at five o’clock.

The 4th day of the Pre-Chapter meeting opened with a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart celebrated by Very Rev. Mario Esposito, O.Carm.  The Gospel reading of the day continued on the imagery of the Good Shepherd begun on Sunday.  Jesus described a good shepherd as one who unites rather than scatters. “I am the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.”

Each Commission presented the Summary of Proposals based on comments received from the questionnaires.  Mother Mark Louis Anne, Superior General, exhorted the Delegates to work with unity of hearts and minds for the common good; respecting the sentiments and concerns of our Sisters; and to act with fairness and justice.  The Delegates reported back to their Commissions for the remainder of the afternoon and joined the Community for Evening Prayers at five o’clock.

Pre-Chapter Highlights: Day Three

On this beautiful Sunday when the Universal Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday and the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, the Delegates and Avila Sisters gathered at Saint Teresa’s Chapel of their Motherhouse to crown Mary, as this Sunday also celebrates Mother’s Day.  We remember in a most special way our own earthly mothers, living and deceased, and ask God to bountifully bless them!  Very Rev. Mario Esposito, O.Carm. was the celebrant.  Our Novices, Sr. Pia Ignatius, Sr. Mary Catherine and Sr. Julie Michael participated in the Crowning Ceremony.  It was a beautiful tribute to Mary as Mother and Queen and her intercession was invoked as we place our prayers and petitions to guide the Delegates in their deliberation during these Pre-Chapter gathering.

A Day of Prayer was scheduled today and hence no Pre-Chapter meetings were conducted. Instead, the Delegates watched a short DVD presentation by Sr. Elizabeth McDonough, O.P on “Authority, Governance and Service.”   Following the DVD, a formal meal was enjoyed in the Refectory.

In the afternoon, a Pre-Chapter prayer service was held with the theme: “Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm- Women of the Church, Evangelizers to the World.”  The remainder of the afternoon was spent in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The day concluded with Evening Prayer at 5 o’clock.

On May 10, 2014, the second day of Pre-Chapter meeting opened with a Votive Mass in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrated by Very Rev. Mario Esposito, O.Carm.  After Mass, the Delegates proceeded with the agenda of the day which was a presentation on Parliamentary Procedure by Sr. Peter Lillian DiMaria, O.Carm.  The Delegates had a chance to be reminded once again of the procedure to be followed in carrying out the work of the Chapter.  Group sessions were conducted to practice on what was learned and questions were answered to clarify areas of ambiguities.  It was both an informative and fun day!  Each Commission met the rest of the afternoon to discuss issues in preparation for their next meeting on Monday, May 12th.
