The Election of the Superior General began with a Votive Mass to the Holy Spirit (homily below) celebrated by Very Reverend  Mario Esposito, O.Carm.  Following Mass, the Capitulars processed in silence to the Chapter Room (Carmel Hall) wearing their mantles.  In the Chapter Room, the Capitulars sang "Come Holy Ghost" invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  The President of the General Chapter (Mother Mark Louis Anne Randall) read the Procedure for Voting.  After the roll call, Sr. Helena of Mary, O.Carm., Chapter Secretary, read articles of the Constitutions pertaining to the qualifications, responsibilities and election of the Superior General.

After the votes were collected, read and tallied, Mother Mark Louis Anne Randall, O.Carm was re-elected Superior General.

The Capitulars then joined the Avila Sisters in Chapel for a Paraliturgical ceremony and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. When the ceremony was completed, members of the Congregation present in Chapel, then proceeded to greet their re-elected Superior General.

September 12, 2014

What a beautiful day!  The Church celebrates the memorial of the Holy Name of Mary, and for Carmelites, there could not be too many feasts and memorials in her honor!  "Carmel is totally Mary" is the phrase well known in Carmel.  Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm. gave a beautiful homily on Mary and the Sisters sang beautiful hymns honoring the Mother of God. It was the perfect way of commencing the day and ending the Chapter of Affairs.

On this seventh day of the Chapter, the Commission on Community, Vocations & Formation, presented the last of their proposals.  The Commission on Spirituality & Ministry presented two revised proposals. At the close of the presentations,  Sr. Joachim Anne invited the Capitulars, to listen to the music tape "HAPPY" and "move as the Spirit directs you!"  It didn't take much encouragement for the Sisters to get on their feet and dance with the beat!  Mother Mark & Council were then presented with tokens of appreciation for the six years of dedicated service rendered to the Community.  It was an emotional moment for Mother Mark and Council and a moving testimony of love and support from their Sisters.  In closing, Mother Mark thanked the Capitulars, Sr. Julie of St. Joseph and Jojo the technician for their live stream coverage, and the Sisters who were watching on live stream.  She remarked that a challenge is before us, and that the hard work done during the Chapter, must now be realized and lived in the Missions.

On this 13th anniversary of 9/11, the nation remembers the victims of the tragedy which changed the life and soul of America forever.  The pain still remains for many whose lives were changed on that fateful day.  Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm offered the Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice as the Carmelite Sisters joined in prayers and petition.  We pray that God in His mercy grant us peace in our day and bestow the justice owed to many in this most challenging and troubled times.  Father Mario's homily can be found below.

The Commission on Community, Vocation & Formation continued the presentation of their proposals.  The Capitulars debated and voted on important issues dealing with prayer, vocations, ongoing formation and transitions, use of technology and more.  It was a bleak and windy day but the sun was out as the Capitulars wrapped up the day's meeting and gathered with the Avila Community for the five o'clock Evening Prayer.  A prayer service at 7:15 pm was held in the Chapel in remembrance of 9/11.  The Commission on Community, Vocations & Formation will continue their presentation on Friday, September 12th.

September 10, 2014

The fifth day of the General Chapter opened with the Votive Mass of Christian Unity celebrated by Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm. The Last Supper account by St. John the Evangelist contains the High Priestly prayer offered by Jesus to the Father as He prepares for His Passion and Death (John 17).  "So that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.."(John 17:21).  Unity in diversity has been the recurring theme in the writings of our Foundress, Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa, and a most important invitation to all in this Chapter. In his homily, Father Mario has offered us once again the opportunity to reflect on this prayer of Our Lord, as the Capitulars continue to consider and discuss the many proposals presented.  The full text of the homily is provided below.

The morning session opened at 10:30 am as the Commission on Spirituality and Ministry wrapped up their two proposals.  The Capitulars recessed for lunch and the meeting was reconvened at 1:30 pm. The Commission on Community, Vocations & Formation  presented their Proposals and the discussion floor was opened.  Some very relevant issues discussed pertain to the essentials of Community living such as Community Support, Community Meetings, Union and Charity, Ongoing Formation and Community Life. The Commission will continue their Proposal Presentations on Thursday, September 11th.  The meeting adjourned at 4:25 pm and the Capitulars joined the Avila Sisters in Chapel for Evening Prayers followed by supper in the Community refectory.

As the Universal Church gathers to celebrate the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Capitulars and Avila Sisters, joined Very Reverend Mario Esposito, O.Carm. in the Eucharistic liturgy at St. Teresa's Chapel in Germantown, NY.  The readings from the prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans, and the Gospel according to St. Matthew, talked about the demands of true Charity, understood as the good of one's neighbor, even when that involves the discomfort of fraternal correction. Father Mario's homily built on the foundation of the readings to speak about Community life and the challenges that come with it. You can read the full homily by opening the link below.

On this Day of Prayer and Reflection, the Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament gave the Sisters the personal time needed to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.  Shortly after morning brunch, a prayer service was held in Chapel to listen to the  words of Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa  written many years ago, as she exhorted her daughters to continue in the way of love, unity, prayer, and fidelity, with their feet set firmly on the ground, hands confidently positioned for the work ahead and the eyes of faith fixed firmly on Jesus!

The last day of the Pre-Chapter meeting opened with Memorial Mass in honor of Saint Simon Stock who tradition holds received the brown scapular from Our Lady.  Father Mario recalled the history of Saint Simon Stock and revisited the relationship that has been forged between Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa and the Carmelite Friars of the Saint Elias Province.  The reminiscing touched the hearts of those present and thanked Father Mario for including it in his homily.  The Delegates proceeded to their last day of formal Pre-Chapter meeting.  The session opened with a prayer service on the Healing Ministry of Christ led by two Delegates.  Mother Mark expressed gratitude for all the hard work by everyone.  Special mention was made to the Commission Chair-Persons, Commission members and secretaries, Father Mario, Chapter Secretary and her Assistants, the Moderator, and last but not least, the Chapter Parliamentarians.  The meeting adjourned and will reconvene for the 13th General Chapter in September 2014.  The Delegates met with their respective Commissions for a short morning session and then proceeded for a formal lunch in the refectory.
