Official Statement: "The Sisterhood Project"

Sister Helena - Wednesday, November 05, 2014

Mother Mark Louis Anne Randall, O.Carm.

Superior General

The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm were approached earlier in the year by Hot Snakes Media to participate in a docu-series on discerning a vocation to the religious life.  The series, named THE SISTERHOOD, was being filmed for the Lifetime Channel. It involved young women who felt a call to religious life and their visits to various religious communities for a week at a time, participating in their prayer life, community and ministry.

We were initially skeptical about the concept, especially as discernment is a lengthy and relatively private process. Multiple discussions with principals at Hot Snakes and Lifetime, however, convinced us that their intent was to respectfully highlight the life of women religious and offer a glimpse of that life to viewers who may have limited knowledge of or exposure to religious sisters.

While we, as other religious communities, would rather quietly go about our daily lives without fanfare, we also recognize that our Holy Father is asking us to step outside our comfort zone and bring the light of Christ to those who may not otherwise be touched by His message. By our participation in The Sisterhood, we hope to communicate in some small way the beauty and peace that comes from living a life dedicated to the Lord, bring greater understanding of what religious life is all about and invite young women to consider the possibility of a religious vocation.  We also wish to convey our deep love and care for the elderly we serve, fostered in us by our Foundress, Venerable Mary Angeline Teresa and nurtured through our prayer and community life in Carmel.

I was excited to see the program last night, VERY interesting stuff! I look forward to watching the series, thought I am not a Catholic, I have found the religious life intriguing and have always wanted to know more. Thank you for stepping out in faith and allowing those of us who yearn to know more an opportunity to experience to peek inside your lives and learn!

Good luck with the new show. Watched the first episode last night on demand and cannot wait for the new ones. Seeing the daily morning mass reminded me of my father who would attend in his later years. Even with a family with seven children raised Catholic I do not remember my parents once suggesting we become nuns or priests. I hope your show brings some encouragement to those who parents may only think of their future grand kids instead of the need for new nuns.

Hi Sisters
Let me first say how much i have enjoyed hearing you express your views on this show. I initially tuned in because I know one of the girls in the show. Full disclosure, i used to be spiritual but not a catholic, but have seen too much violence done in the name of religion serving abroad and at home as an officer for the US government. Cynical and jaded i expected the worst.
I found Sister Cyril, Mother Mark and the rest of you to be funny, tolerant, brave, giving, kind, warm, and patient. Your ministry with the aged touches my heart You have restored my faith in organized religion.
God Bless You all

I just wanted to let all of you know that I have been watching the show with great interest. I think that your segments have conveyed exactly what you wished. I am touched by the beauty and grace of your vows. I find it very inspiring. I have been searching for peace for a long time, something has been missing, and you all have reminded me that what I lost along the way was my relationship with God. I am hoping to find a local church and join a congregation. Thank you so much, for playing a part in helping me find my way back. Take care, Ursula

Sisters, Congratulations for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. I just finished watching the last segment of the series tonight. I thought the portrayal of the Carmelite Sisters was very impressive. All the Sisters shown on the air seemed to be women of great depth and substance. Peace to all of you during this Advent Season.
